Police rescue intoxicated man who fell into harbor while washing clothes

Barnstable Police pulled a man from the Hyannis Harbor after he fell in the water while washing his clothes.

At about 2 a.m. on Sunday, police received a call from someone who saw a man at the Ocean Street docks stumbling around trying to do laundry in the harbor water.

Two officers found a pile of clothes on the dock and a 57-year-old Hyannis man submerged in the harbor up to his neck. He was clinging on to the floating pier as officers pulled him out of the water.

According to police, the man was conscious and appeared to be heavily intoxicated -- he spent several minutes trying to yell for help.

He told police he was trying to wash his clothes when he tumbled off the dock into the water.

Hyannis Rescue transported the man to Cape Cod Hospital where he was admitted for treatment.
