BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A Woburn Police officer wounded during a jewelry store robbery was among 28 officers honored at the 29th annual Hanna Awards on Tuesday.
Officer Robert DeNapoli and more than two dozen other local police officers, two Mass. state troopers, and the Boston Police Special Weapons and Tactical Operations Team were honored with a Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Award for Bravery.
DeNapoli was shot seven times while responding to a robbery at Musto Jewelers in Woburn's Four Corners intersection.
Officer Mark Gibbons, who is credited with saving DeNapoli's life and chasing down one of the suspects, was also honored at the event. Gibbons was honored as a Top Cop of 2011 by the National Association of Police Officers for his heroic actions.
In 2011, fellow Woburn Police officer John "Jack" Maguire was posthumously honored with a Hanna Award. Maguire was shot and killed in Dec. 2010 while responding to a robbery at a Kohl's department store.
Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray addressed the honorees at the University of Massachusetts at Boston.
"Every day, in countless ways, we are reminded of the crucial role police officers play in keeping our neighborhoods safe," said Governor Patrick. "And we never can forget the dangers they face, the sacrifices they and their families make, and the debt we owe to them. It is of great importance that we recognize today's award recipients. They truly are the finest, and the bravest."
