Patriots' Vince Wilfork helped woman involved in rollover crash following AFC title game

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Vince Wilfork helped a woman who was involved in an accident on Route 1 in Foxborough after Sunday's AFC Championship game.

Massachusetts State Police troopers responded to an accident on the highway at 12:45 a.m., finding Wilfork next to a 2015 Jeep Wrangler that had rolled over. Wilfork was checking on the driver, according to State Police.

While troopers held the door open, Wilfork -- with one hand -- pulled the driver out of the vehicle. Since the Jeep was overturned, the door was on the top of the vehicle, which can make helping passengers out more difficult, said Trooper Matthew Guarino.

"Vince walked right up to the vehicle, reached into the edge, she grabbed onto him, he pulled her out," Guarino said.

The Patriots defensive tackle and captain then checked with the troopers to see if they needed any more assistance, before going on his way with his wife.

The driver, 38-year-old Mary Ellen Brooks of Hanson was subsequently arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Brooks reportedly had no idea that it was Wilfork who helped her, Guarino said, until troopers on the scene told her after.

"In the 20 years I've been on State Police, I've seen a few famous people, usually athletes, assisting in some way. It's always a great thing to see," Guarino said, adding that it was "outstanding" to know that even after the incredible night Wilfork had, he took the time to make sure someone else was safe.

"I just seen the car turned over, and turned around, and just went to help," Wilfork said Monday. "I think anybody'd do the same thing."

Guarino said Brooks was lucky no one else was involved in the crash, and that drinking and driving remained an issue after Patriots games. She will appear in Wrentham District Court on Tuesday.
