Overnight shooting in Woburn leads to arrest of Dorchester man

WOBURN, Mass. — A Dorchester man was arrested and charged in a shooting in Woburn overnight Saturday, according to an official release from the town’s police department.

Asa Cooper, 28, faces five charges stemming from the incident: assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing injury, assault to murder with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, possession of a firearm without a license, and illegal possession of ammunition.

Officials responded to Highland Street in Woburn just after midnight on Saturday for reports of shots fired. There, they observed a 43-year-old area man suffering from two apparent gunshot wounds to his legs.

The victim was transported to a local hospital; his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

According to law enforcement, police learned, through witnesses, that the shooting began following an argument over $10. Cooper allegedly fled in a minivan with three other people.

After a description of the van was distributed to other local law enforcement, Stoneham Police and Massachusetts State Police located the van on the on-ramp to I-93 South in Woburn. Four people were inside the vehicle, including Cooper.

Police eventually concluded that Cooper was allegedly involved in the shooting before placing him under arrest and seizing the vehicle. No other occupants of the car were arrested.

No weapons have been recovered, and the incident remains under investigation. Cooper will be arraigned in Woburn District Court on Tuesday.
