FALMOUTH, Mass. — A one-year-old girl was attacked by her family's dog Sunday morning.
Falmouth Police said they received a call around 9 about the attack.
Officials said the girl was playing in the kitchen with her father nearby when the family's pitbull terrier attacked her, biting her in the face and causing major trauma.
Her father tried to get the dog off her, but was unable.
Officials said the man grabbed his pistol, but when he realized it wasn't loaded, he grabbed a knife and began stabbing the dog. killing it.

The little girl was brought to a local hospital and was then transported to a Boston hospital by helicopter.
Boston 25 News was told that the girl had blood transfusions and underwent surgery. Despite her serious injuries, doctors are optimistic. The 1-year-old will likely be in the hospital for weeks.
The family said they had owned the dog for five years, and it had no known history of violence or aggression.
The incident is under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department.
