Obama proposes free community college for some students

WASHINGTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- President Barack Obama plans to announce a proposal Friday that will allow some students to go to community college for free for two years.

Obama's plan is to have the federal government work with states to waive the first two years of tuition for some students who attend community college, according to The New York Times. In order to get their tuition waived, students will need to have at least a 2.5 grade point average and be attending the school half- or full-time. A fact sheet released by the White House said the student would also need to be making "steady progress toward completing a program."

Obama's proposal will still need to be approved by Congress, and White House officials reportedly said the cost would be significant. If a state wants to take part and allow their students to attend community college for free, they would be responsible for the bill.

An average of 7.7 million Americans go to community college, according to The New York Times, who also reported that the federal government gives about $9.1 billion to community colleges each year while students pay about $16.7 billion.
