NORWOOD, Mass. — A local funeral home is under investigation after accusations involving a mix-up of two bodies.
Investigators from the State Division of Professional Licensure arrived at the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home Wednesday morning, but they didn't have much to say.
Boston 25 News learned of the state investigation on Monday after an anonymous tip came in about a burial mix-up involving two families that happened around July 7.
Since then, Boston 25 has spoken with the owner of the funeral home, who initially had no idea what we were talking about because we learned of the investigation before he did.
Four men had funerals originating at Kraw-Kornack around the period in question. Three of them were buried at the Highland Cemetery in Norwood. The fourth was buried at the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Sharon.
Over the past few days, Boston 25 has spoken with family members or associates of all four of the deceased men. Three families say they saw nothing amiss with their loved ones' funerals, but a person who attended the funeral of the fourth man gave troubling details about a burial mishap, including an allegation that the deceased was buried as somebody else with full military honors meant for another man.
As a result, she says, the coffin at his wake was empty.
Boston 25 attempted to verify those details with a family member, but she declined to speak with us.
Investigators spent more than an hour Wednesday talking with the funeral home owners.
Now, officials must present evidence to the appropriate board of registration, which in this case, would be the one covering funeral directors and embalmers. The board will then decide whether disciplinary action is warranted.
