Norwood funeral home director surrenders license amid investigation

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

NORWOOD, Mass. — One week after state investigators visited a Norwood funeral home over allegations of a body mix-up, Boston 25 News has learned that one of the principals of the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home has surrendered his funeral director license.

George Kornack had been running the funeral home with his son John for more than 30 years, but last month the elder Kornack became the focus of a state investigation that, Boston 25 learned, involves two families.

That alleged body mix-up happened in early July. That week, George Kornack was the funeral director in charge. His son said he was away in California that week.

A source confirms John Kornack's absence that week when four men had funerals that originated at Kraw-Kornack.

Three were buried in the Highland Cemetery in Norwood and one was buried in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Sharon. Three of the deceased were veterans and one was not.

The allegation is that a body to be waked was switched with a body to be buried.

Boston 25 spoke with family members or associates of four families potentially involved. Three noticed nothing amiss at their loved ones' funeral and the fourth declined to talk with us.

Boston 25 News obtained a copy of the surrender agreement between the state's Division of Professional Licensure and George Kornack.

Part of it reads:
"...this surrender of (Kornack's) funeral license is a final act... Depriving him of all privileges of licensure... And is not subject to reconsideration or judicial review."

In other words, after nearly 60 years as a funeral home director, George Kornack is done.

Boston 25 did put a call in to the Kornack's, but did not hear back from them. Now, just because George Kornack has surrendered his license does not mean this matter is closed. The state will continue its investigation of this alleged body mix-up and that means, for now, investigators are maintaining their relative silence on the case.
