MANCHESTER, N.H. — A Manchester, N.H. man shot a neighbor's pit bull after the dog charged at him and his own dog, officials said.

The man says he was pulled to the ground and attacked by the pit bull and fired the gun in self-defense.

According to the man, he was taking his small dog out for a walk on Bowman Street when a loose pit bull charged at him and the dog.

Manchester Police say the 67-year-old man was attacked and bitten on his right arm by the pit bull Sunday afternoon.

The man told police the dog pulled him to the ground, and when he was finally able to free himself from the dog and get back on his feet, he says the dog came charging back once again. He says he shot at the pit bull in fear of another attack.

The victim told Boston 25 News that he did not know his neighbors owned the pit bull. He was sent to the hospital for his treatment of his injuries.

Police say the pit bull is being treated at a local animal hospital for a single gunshot wound.
