CONWAY, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- It was happy and unexpected news in New Hampshire: Abigail Hernandez, missing since last October, is finally home.
She returned home on Sunday night, the New Hampshire Attorney General's office confirmed on Monday.
"Today we are the happiest people on earth," her mother reportedly told officials when she and her daughter were reunited.
The "Bring Abby Home" website proclaimed that Abby is home safe with her mother and sister.
The teenager was last seen Oct. 9, 2013 in North Conway. N.H., leaving Kennett High School at about 2:30 p.m. that day.
Abby Hernandez wrote a letter to her mother, Zenya Hernandez, postmarked on October 23 that her mother received on November 6. At a press conference in December, law enforcement officials announced that Zenya had received the letter, but did not reveal its contents or say where it had been postmarked from.
Neal Moylan, Kennett High School's principal, released a short statement about Abby's homecoming.
"We are happy and relieved that Abby has returned home safely to her family," the statement read.
The FBI and New Hampshire AG's office would not say how Abby came home, or why she left. No further details were given on Monday afternoon, and the investigation remains ongoing.
"I actually didn't think she'd be back, so I was pretty surprised about the whole thing," said Conway resident Cennedy Warren.
