MBTA launches new Twitter bot to update parking garage capacity

BOSTON — A new Twitter account will tell you how full the MBTA's parking garage's are.

The new Twitter handle is @MBTA_Parking and it will tweet an update on parking spot availability at its eight largest garages every 30 minutes.

Updates will be provided for the Alewife, Beverly, Braintree, Quincy Adams, Route 128, Salem, Wonderland and Woodland garages.

“As part of our efforts to make investments to upgrade our system and improve reliability for our customers, we’re embracing new and innovative technology,” said MBTA General Manager Luis Manuel Ramírez.  “By providing live updates on parking availability at our busiest garages, our customers can make more informed decisions about when and how they travel.”

According to the MBTA, some parking facilities like Wonderland and Quincy Adams reach full capacity on weekdays by 8 a.m. and 8:30.

Republic Parking and IBM helped the MBTA develop the new Twitter bot.

The T is considering whether to expand the service to more garages.
