Man saved by responding officer after firework explodes in his hand

MANSFIELD, Mass. — A Blackstone man was rushed to the hospital on Friday afternoon after a firework blew up in his hands.

A parking officer conducting enforcement in the River Street commuter rail parking lot heard an explosion at around 1:30 p.m.

Officer Simonds found a 38-year-old man suffering from a significant hand injury. The officer applied a tourniquet on the man's left arm.

Preliminary investigation shows the man had lit the fuse of a single firework and then picked it up, causing it to blow up in his hand.

Fire officials responded to the scene and transported the man to a local trauma center.

MBTA, ATF and AMTRAK officers also responded to the scene. A Massachusetts State Police K9 unit also responded and confirmed the area was free from other explosives.

The incident did not cause any major train delays and remains under police investigation.
