Man dies after saying he was having trouble breathing during arrest in Malden

A man died after saying he was having trouble breathing while being arrested in Malden, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

In a release, the office said Malden Police responded to multiple 911 calls around 8:45 p.m. on October 6 after reports of a man who was under the influence and creating a disturbance.

The man was allegedly "acting aggressively" and assault a security guard at the Quarry Lane apartment complex in Malden.

A woman told police her 37-year-old son was out of control, and police then asked the man to leave the apartment.

The man allegedly broke a door and a window inside the apartment, and the DA's office's preliminary investigation said police then used pepper spray to try to subdue the man.

The man then allegedly continued to struggle with police before being placed in handcuffs, and he then allegedly reported he was having trouble breathing.

Emergency medical services responded to take him to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, and the man was pronounced dead around 10 p.m.

The cause and manner of the death have yet to be determined, and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office is still investigating.
