Skimming devices found at Sturbridge gas pumps, police investigating

(Sturbridge Police Department)

STURBRIDGE, Mass. — Officials are investigating after several skimming devices were found at a gas station in Sturbridge on Friday.

Sturbridge Police say they responded to the Pilot Travel Center after a skimming device was found on three different diesel pumps. In fact, this is the second time this week skimming apparatus were found at this particular gas station, according to authorities.

Skimming is an illegal activity where devices are installed on ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, or fuel pumps to capture credit card data or record cardholders’ PIN numbers. The devices store the data where the criminal can download or wirelessly transfer the information at a later time.

Police say they have recovered a total of six skimming devices at the Pilot Travel Center and although these mechanisms were only found at one gas station, they’re reminding the public to remain vigilant.

“If you see a device like this on a gas pump, do not use the pump,” Sturbridge Police wrote in a social media post. “Instead, please report this to store management and report any and all suspicious activity to the police.”

If you believe you’re a victim of a skimming scam, please contact your bank and file a report with the police.
