WEST NEWBURY, Mass. — On Saturday, members of the West Newbury Fire Department responded to an auditorium fire that prompted mutual aid to the scene.
Crews were dispatched around 2:57 p.m. to Pentucket Regional High School.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire at the back of the school’s auditorium.
A West Newbury officer and a high school teacher working with the school’s robotics team in a different part of the school were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
To ensure that the fire was fully extinguished, firefighters deployed a fire hose to take out any remaining hotspots. They also stayed at the scene to ventilate smoke out of the high school.
School Assistant Superintendent Brent Conway stated, “The quick action of the lead teacher and mentors who were working in the building, saved the fire from spreading further.”
About 20 students from the school’s robotics team were in the building and were sent home. There were no reported injuries.
Mutual aid was provided by Groveland, Newbury, Merrimac, and Georgetown Fire Departments, and Atlantic Ambulance. The Newbury Fire Department covered West Newbury during the incident.
There is no word if there will be classes held on Monday, Conway stated, “A decision on whether School will be held on Monday at the middle/high school will be determined by Sunday evening. Information will be posted on the school’s website,”.
Preliminary investigation believes the fire was caused by a work accident, but is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
