Video shows commuters hiking along tracks after Green Line cars evacuated in tunnel

BOSTON — More than 100 MBTA riders were forced to hike along the tracks after three Green Line trains became stuck and had to be evacuated in the tunnel in the area of Copley station on Thursday night.

Shuttle buses replaced eastbound service between Kenmore station and Government Center for hours following a “signal problem” at Copley station, according to the MBTA.

Video shared by Gabriella Melchiorri showed Green Line trains stopped in the tunnel as commuters walked along the tracks to find an exit.

“We were initially told no, that it was too dangerous. Eventually, when they realized an hour went by, that was probably the best option,” Melchiorri said. “We had to a walk for a couple minutes, a short distance, to the stop...It was quite an interesting evening.”

There were no reported injuries during the incident, according to the MBTA.

Green Line service was back to normal on Friday morning.
