US Marine pilot from New Hampshire among five killed in crash of Osprey aircraft in California

GLAMIS, Calif. — A 31-year-old US Marine pilot from New Hampshire is among the five Marines killed in the crash of an Osprey aircraft. The crash happened on Wednesday near Glamis, California.

MV-22B pilot, Capt. Nicholas P. Losapio was from Rockingham.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of five Marines from the Purple Fox family,” Lt. Col. John C. Miller, commanding officer of Marine Medium Tiltrotor (VMM) Squadron 364, said in a statement. “This is an extremely difficult time for VMM-364 and it is hard to express the impact that this loss has had on our squadron and its families.

The aircraft belonged to the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing.

The four other Marines were identified as 33-year-old Capt. John J. Sax of Placer, California, 21-year-old Cpl. Nathan E. Carlson of Winnebago, Illinois; 21-year-old Cpl. Seth D. Rasmuson of Johnson, Wyoming and Lance Cpl. Evan A. Strickland, 19, of Valencia, New Mexico.

Authorities are still investigating the deadly crash. The aircraft was based at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton.

The Marines will be reunited with their families through dignified transfer in the coming days.

Capt. Losapio is the second airman from New England killed in a training mission involving an Osprey aircraft this year.

Capt. Ross Reynolds of Leominster died in April when the Osprey he was piloting crashed during a NATO exercise in April. That crash killed four Marines.
