DURHAM, N.H. — Durham Police arrested a University of New Hampshire student after he accidentally fired a gun inside his apartment, where the bullet traveled through the wall and hit a woman in the back.

According to police, they were called to The Lodges at West Edge at 259 Mast Road at around 5:40 p.m. on Thursday for reports of a female resident who had been struck with an unknown projectile that came into her apartment through the wall.

At the scene, officials found the 22-year-old woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the back. They also found 24-year-old Brian Nguyen inside the woman’s apartment, attempting to provide first aid.

An investigation showed Nguyen, the woman’s next door neighbor, had accidentally discharged his gun while in the process of dry firing it. He is being charged with one count of felony reckless conduct and subsequently released on personal recognizance bail.

The woman was transported by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for treatment.

Both the woman and Nguyen are UHN students.

Durham Police said the case remains under investigation, but no additional charges are anticipated.
