AMHERST, Mass. — A 19-year-old UMass Amherst student has died after being hit by a car driven by another student.
The victim, Elena Lucore, of Mississippi, was on Massachusetts Avenue on Tuesday night with a friend when she was struck by the car, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. It happened around 9:15 p.m. near the UMass visitor’s Center on campus.
“Lucore was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where she was pronounced dead. Her companion was not hurt,” according to a statement from the district attorney’s office.
“The driver of the car, a 21-year-old UMass student, who told police he was returning home from the library, remained on the scene and was cooperative with police investigators,” says the DA’s office.
“According to reports, it was raining at the time of the fatality.” said the district attorney’s office.
The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this point.
The Dean of Students sent a letter to the campus community on Wednesday morning.
“It is with sadness that I write to inform you that a member of our community, Elena Lucore, has passed away,” said Dean Evelyn Ashley. “Elena, from Bay St Louis, MS, was majoring in Business.”
Ashley urged the community to reach out for assistance if needed. “The news of this loss may be challenging for many in our community; our resources are available for that support,” said Ashley. “We extend our sincere condolences to Elena’s family and friends. The Student Loss and Remembrance page will be updated with any arrangements that the family wishes to share.”
The Office of the Chief Medical Officer will determine the cause of death, according to the district attorney’s office.
