Massachusetts unveils renderings for Cape Cod’s new Sagamore Bridge

SAGAMORE, Mass. — Massachusetts transportation officials have released new renderings of the future Sagamore Bridge, offering a closer look at the long-awaited replacement that will connect Cape Cod to the mainland.

The new bridge will be wider and longer than the existing structure and is designed to improve traffic flow for the tens of millions of drivers who travel across the Cape Cod Canal each year. Plans call for 12-foot travel lanes in both directions.

The project will also include new features for cyclists and pedestrians, such as a shared-use pathway and a scenic overlook with views of the canal, as well as enhanced lighting and bridge foundations designed to better accommodate marine traffic.

Gov. Maura Healey says the new span will improve safety, reduce congestion, and provide modern accommodations for motorists, walkers, and cyclists traveling to and from Cape Cod.

“For decades, people have talked about replacing the Cape Cod Bridges. Our administration is getting it done,” Healey said in a statement. “These new renderings give people a look at the safer, stronger bridge we’re building for residents, businesses and everyone who depends on these crossings every day. We’re making historic investments to improve transportation, strengthen the Cape’s economy and make it easier and safer for people to get where they need to go.”

According to MassDOT, construction on the replacement bridge could begin by the end of 2027. Once work starts, it is expected to take about five years before traffic can be shifted onto the new bridge, a milestone currently projected for around 2033.

Final completion is currently anticipated in 2036.

The Sagamore Bridge replacement is expected to cost just over $2 billion and is considered one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects in Massachusetts.
