‘Sounded like a freight train’: Mass. residents describe moment earthquake struck off New England

DEDHAM, Mass. — Residents of Massachusetts reported feeling an earthquake off the coast of Maine Monday, describing the sound that accompanied the rumble as a freight train roaring down the rails.

The United States Geological Survey confirmed a 3.8-magnitude earthquake southeast of York Harbor, Maine, just before 10:30 a.m.

Boston 25 News reporter April Baker said she felt the earthquake just as she got into her car in the parking lot of the Dedham studios.

“I started to feel my car rattle...I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on,” Baker said. “Then we started receiving text messages and emails among staff at work from people who had been feeling this earthquake...It wasn’t just the fact that I was tired on a Monday morning. It was actually an earthquake.”

Baker said the rumble she felt lasted for about three seconds, likening it to the “rocking” one would experience on a boat.

MEMA said there were no reports of damage from the earthquake in the Bay State, while MassDOT was “monitoring” the situation.

A USGS “shakemap” indicates the earthquake was felt as far south as Cape Cod and the Islands and as far north as New Hampshire’s White Mountains region.

Hundreds of Boston 25 News Facebook followers shared what they noticed after the earthquake hit.

A resident of Salisbury commented, “Sounded like a freight train before the entire house shook.” A Rowley resident added, “Ouch! Felt it here in Rowley and it was a loud pop and almost hurt my ears.”

“The whole hallway in the school where I work was shaking in Framingham. I thought it was construction,” another person wrote.

A Stoneham resident said, “Everything rattled as if some oversized heavy machinery was rolling down the street.”

The USGS initially categorized the earthquake as 4.1 magnitude but downgraded it slightly to 3.9 and then 3.8.

York Harbor is 66.5 miles northeast of Boston.
