TROY, N.H. — A second person has died at a Massachusetts hospital after a deadly house fire in New Hampshire early Tuesday morning.

Madalyn K. Jalava, 24, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston from injuries she suffered in Tuesday’s fire, the state fire marshal said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

Benjamin P. Jalava, 56, was pronounced dead on Tuesday at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene after the fire.

Autopsies conducted on both victims remain pending, officials said. Both victims lived at the home where the fire happened.

Around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, emergency crews responded to a report of a chimney fire that had extended to a porch at a home at 51 Morse St. in Troy, fire officials said.

When crews arrived, they learned two people were still inside.

Firefighters rushed into the home and brought Benjamin Jalava and Madalyn Jalava outside, where they received immediate medical care.

An unknown number of pets also died in the fire, fire officials said.

The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the blaze.
