Residents able to return home following ruptured gas line in Canton

A ruptured gas line in Canton forced residents to be evacuated from their homes Thursday morning.

Homes on Spring Lane were evacuated after a 2-inch break was found in the gas line, according to the Canton Fire Department.

Drivers were asked to use Washington Street as a detour before town officials said shortly after 12:30 that the gas line had been shut off and residents were able to return home.

“Gas line repairs are ongoing, and there is no ongoing danger to residents,” the Fire Department said. “Chapman Street is back open for vehicular travel, but traffic will be restricted on Spring Street until repairs are complete.”

“We’re all relieved that we were able to quickly contain this leak, clear the area and avoid a more serious incident,” said Canton Fire Chief Jamie Meier. “This serves as a reminder to residents to always report gas leaks promptly to authorities.”
