Priest assaulted with beer can in New Bedford, police say

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — A 59-year-old man was arrested in New Bedford on Monday after he allegedly assaulted a priest with a beer can.

Police say it happened around 5:15 p.m. when units responded to a disturbance call at Mount Caramel Church on Bonney Street.

When officers arrived, they observed a man, identified as Jose Nascimento, involved in an alleged physical altercation with a priest and bystander who was assisting.

A physical confrontation subsequently occurred as the priest escorted the male outside, police say.

Police say the priest sustained a minor injury to his face after being punched and hit with a beer can. He was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

Nascimento was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, threat to commit a crime, disturbing the peace, and disorderly conduct.
