Powerful wind causes scattered power outages statewide

NEWTON, Mass. — More than 10,000 customers were without power Tuesday morning after powerful wind gusts took down trees in many communities.

One tree fell across the road on Garland Street in Newton. A utility worker was seen fixing wires on one side of the street, and by 5 a.m., the tree had been cleared from the roadway. In Mission Hill, a tree limb fell and damaged two vehicles. North of the city, in Dracut, a tree ripped wires down on Merrimack Avenue.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts between 30 miles per hour and 60 miles per hour with most of the strongest winds along the coast.

By 7 a.m. there were about 4,800 customers without power according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.
