Scituate teens organize beach cleanup after fishing boat sinks and spills fuel

SCITUATE, Mass. — Bella Dwyer is a junior at Scituate High School and works part time at Mullaney’s Fish Market in Scituate. Shortly after a fishing boat sank off the coast of Scituate on February 1st, with three crew members clinging to gear until they were rescued, Bella knew she had to do something. “We thought it was really important because we didn’t want anything left over that could harm the fish or anyone going to the beach,” she said.

Bella and 9 of her co-workers took it upon themselves to organize and collect trash and any debris in the Spit area of Scituate after the fishing boat sank. “It was really important because we didn’t want any fish or animals be contaminated and we didn’t want any fish that we could potentially sell have the oil that came off the boat,” Bella said.

The Mullaney’s crew hauled a truckload of trash off the beach and also sprayed soap on any oil & diesel spots they found on the beach and in the marsh. Mullaney’s Fish Market owner, Joby Norton, says he’s honored to have such a great bunch of kids working for him. “Super proud that they take pride in not only their town and their environment, but as 15, 16, 17-year-old kids, they are able to implement something like that to help the community out and not to look for any accolades for it, but to do it for the good of the town and the beaches,”  Norton said.

Bella and her co-workers spent about 3 hours cleaning the beach.  They pulled old lobster pots, ropes and all sorts of debris off the beach. “It made me feel really good that we did something that was good for the community and was good for the ocean,” she said.

The teenagers took the truckload of debris to the fishing pier in Scituate.  The Town of Scituate then hauled it away.
