Pilot injured after crashing small plane into a spa in Gilford NH

GILFORD, NH — One person was injured after a small plane crashed in a nearby parking lot as it was attempting to land at Laconia Municipal Airport in Gilford, N.H. on Thursday evening.

According to officials, the pilot was flying a single-engine Cessna 175, or sea plane, and for unknown reasons was not able to land at the airport. When emergency crews responded, they found the plane on its roof in the rear parking lot of the Gateway Spa in Gilford.

The pilot was extricated from his harness and was placed on a backboard suffering from head and facial injuries, officials said. The pilot was transported to Concord hospital to be treated for those injuries.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time however, the plane did hit the roof of the spa building causing a hole that was covered by firefighters using a tarp and lumber.

Chief Stephen Carrier stated, “We are very thankful that nobody in the building, or on the ground, was injured. The businesses in the building were all occupied. It is a busy area. We wish the best for the pilot.”

Gilford companies remain on scene awaiting the arrival of State and Federal aviation officials. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
