Local campus police warn of religious group requesting students’ personal information

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Bridgewater State University Police are warning of a religious group approaching students on campus reportedly asking for their personal information.

Campus police say they’ve received reports that representatives from the World Mission Society Church of God (World Mission Church) have been approaching students on campus in attempts to recruit them to become new members.

Students have reportedly been asked to:

  • Watch videos or review materials about “God the Mother.”
  • Talk privately about bible studies
  • Provide their names, social security numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, and other personal information.

Police say some students have referred to the representatives as “aggressive.”

Campus police also say reports online linking the religious group to human trafficking are false. Still, they are advising students to be cautious when approached by unfamiliar people, as always.

Students should be wary of going to any kind of private meeting and should not reveal any personal identifying information. Students can contact police if they have concerns at (508)-531-1212.

According to campus police, the group has not been authorized to be on campus, as is required by the university’s Free Speech and Demonstration Policy. Because the group is in violation of university policy, its representatives will be escorted from the campus if encountered by BSUPD officers, and a no-trespassing order will be issued.
