EVERETT, Mass. — Following a settlement for a defamation lawsuit, Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria has been awarded $1.1 million against the Everett Leader Herald, its owner, publisher and editor.
The settlement comes after the Everett Leader Herald was accused of publishing falsified stories that were aimed to tarnish the Mayor’s reputation.
With the terms of the settlement, the 139-year-old newspaper company is being forced to shut down and its owner, publisher and editor will be ordered to pay the $1.1 million all within seven days.
In return for the payment and agreement to shut down the newspaper, Mayor DeMaria will forgo with the trial of defamation, which would’ve taken place on January 21.
Mayor DeMaria and his attorney’s will be holding a news conference tomorrow, December 16, to discuss the settlement.
