Police: Driver says he was looking at phone right before Salem crash

Police are investigating a Sunday night shooting on Perkins Street in Salem that seriously injured two people.

SALEM, Mass. — Two people are now in the hospital after a 23-year-old Peabody man crashed into another car early Sunday morning in Salem, police said.

The Salem Police Department told Boston 25 they received reports of a motor vehicle accident with a vehicle rolled over at approximately 2 a.m. in the area of Lafayette Street. Officers who responded to the crash found one vehicle on its roof and another with accident damage.

The driver of the upside-down car, a 23-year-old Peabody man, told officers he was looking at his phone when the accident occurred.

Salem Police added that officers found two other people in the other vehicle, who were sent by ambulance to Salem Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
