Drag racing through Boston: The high-speed mayhem happening on one busy street

BOSTON — Neighbors heard the screeching of tires recently on a rainy night, the sound of cars drag racing once again.

This time, they collided on American Legion Highway.

Abner Bonilla says his security camera caught it as it happened.

“As they pass the gas station they crash into each other because they were so close and they hit the curb. You could hear the explosion. It woke us up,” Bonilla said.

And the drag racing is getting worse, Bonilla said.

“As the weather gets warmer it picks up,” Bonilla said.

Video from last week shows a speeding car running a light and then crashing. He says for people who live here drag racing on American Legion Highway is a daily occurrence. He says it starts in the evening,

“Any time from 8 o’clock until 3 o’clock in the morning people are racing,” Bonilla said.

The speed limit is 30 miles per hour. Bonilla said no one obeys.

“No, never. This is just, they should call it American Legion Racetrack,” Bonilla said.

Neighbors even a few blocks away hear it too.

“I live, I don’t know how many streets away, and I can hear it like it’s out my back window. So, it’s pretty loud,” said one woman who asked to remain anonymous.

Bonilla said there are plenty of accidents too from a car up on the lawn and a motorcycle wiping out in front of his house. All of it from speeding.

He knows police are busy says more police presence could help.

“Just being parked in the plaza over my shoulder to show that they’re there, people are less likely to race,” he said.
