Dozens of sharks spotted in water off Cape Cod over the weekend

CHATHAM, Mass. — People who have the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Sharktivity app received many notifications over the weekend.

The first great white shark sighting was reported on Friday morning off North Beach Island in Chatham. Additional sightings and detections then steadily poured in through Sunday.

On Friday, there were 11 total shark sightings, as well as one unconfirmed sighting. Another 16 sightings were reported on Saturday, including a pair of sharks that were spotted about 30 yards from the shore off Monomoy Island.

There were six more sightings on Sunday. Nauset Public Beach was closed to swimming after a confirmed shark sighting in the water about 75 yards from the shore.

“Ken” the shark was also detected by a buoy in the water off the upper Cape. Another shark named “Warren” was detected early Monday morning.

July tends to be when great whites appear in large numbers as the Cape’s waters warm, with sightings peaking from August through October, according to Megan Winton, a scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

Beachgoers are urged to be most vigilant when swimming off beaches where the shoreline quickly drops off into deeper waters.

The recent sightings come as environmental officials in Plymouth warn boaters of breaching whales.
