Christmas Tree Shops to file for bankruptcy, according to report

Mass. — Christmas Tree Shops is preparing to file for bankruptcy.

The Middleborough-based line of home decor stores is prepared to formally file for bankruptcy as early as this weekend, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Christmas Tree Shops, which has over 80 locations in 20 states, has hired a Boston-based law firm to prepare for the Chapter 11 filing.

The first store location was opened in 1970 in Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod. Over the ensuing decades, the brand expanded across the United States.

Bed Bath and Beyond owned and operated the stores from 2003 to 2020 before selling all the locations to Middleborough-based Handil Holdings.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
