After dropping their last three series and hours before a crucial series with their eternal foes in the Bronx, Boston got more bad news.
Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale will miss an extended period of time after being placed on the 60-day injured list, the team announced Friday.
The 34-year-old southpaw was put on the injured list last week with left shoulder inflammation. Despite initial hope from manager Alex Cora that Sale could return quickly, the club will have to make do without the 7-time all-star until at least August.
Sale has dealt with significant injuries in each of the last five seasons. An elbow injury ended his 2019 season early, and Sale was unable to return until well until the 2021 season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. An illness, a finger injury and a broken wrist then cost him nearly all of 2022.
Sale currently touts a 4.58 ERA and a 5-2 record on the year.
The Sox and Yankees will open their series int he Bronx at 7:05 p.m. Friday night.
