Chilmark Police investigating fatal moped crash in Martha’s Vineyard

CHILMARK, Mass. — One person is dead, and another is in serious condition after a moped accident that happened Saturday afternoon in Martha’s Vineyard on South Road in the area of Stonewood Lane.

Chilmark Police told Boston 25 News they were first alerted to the accident at 11:58 a.m. after receiving calls of a moped accident with serious injuries.

Upon arrival, officers determined the accident occurred on South Rd in the area of Stonewood Lane, where the moped struck a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Officers were able to locate the driver of the moped, a 20-year-old male, and the passenger, a 20-year-old female.

The male driver was transported from Martha’s Vineyard Airport to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence via Med Flight. The female passenger was transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital via Tri-Town Ambulance, where she later died.

The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis &Reconstruction Section was called in for assistance due to the severity of the accident. The accident remains under investigation at this time.
