Cape Cod Canal reopens after endangered whales spotted

CAPE COD, Mass — The Cape Cod Canal has reopened after endangered whales were spotted in the water on Sunday afternoon.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Sunday afternoon that the US Army Corp of Engineers had closed the canal to all vessel traffic due to the presence of three right whales.

Monday morning, the canal remained closed because the Coast Guard spotted another whale traveling through the water.

The canal reopened around 9:30 a.m on Monday.

In December 2022, a New England Aquarium official told Boston 25 News that the population for the North Atlantic right whales are in dire straights.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
