PEMBROKE, Mass. — Pembroke Town Green was alight with hundreds of luminaries Thursday night to honor the memories of Billy Hickey and Joey Birolini.

“Besides tears, I’ll probably be speechless you know. It’s just been a great thing to see everybody come together and something positive to be a part of during his tragic time,” said neighbor and family friend Chris Brundage.

The tragedy struck when the two friends died after a car crash Saturday morning, their loss leaving a wound in the hearts of those who knew them.

“Every person they talked to or touched and they touched everyone’s lives that they ever met. It is emphasized by everything happening here,” said Mike Fahey, who is a friend and played hockey with them.

Besides this candlelight tribute, there was also a video tribute shown on local cable television to honor the lives of two friends. There were pictures and memories shared by friends.

“They lived life to the fullest and touched the lives of everyone around them,” said Joe Tarquini, a friend.

“These two were just the best guys anyone could know and I’m just going to miss them so much,” said Jack Wengryn, another friend.

In 23 short years, these two friends who impacted so many will always be remembered by those who loved them.

“They were the glue that held our friends together .. it’s crazy how much support they have and how many people love them,” said Colin McCabe, a friend who also played hockey with them.
