WHITMAN, Mass. — A Brockton man was arrested in Whitman Wednesday after he allegedly assaulted a woman, knocking her to the ground, kicked her and hitting her with a bicycle, leaving her with serious injuries.

Whitman police said Yvens Hilaire, 34, fled from police in a car when they responded to call around 8:20 p.m. about a fight near 912 Bedford St. in Whitman.

He was eventually arrested nearby, and police say though they aren’t certain what led to the fight, Hilaire allegedly knocked the woman to the ground, kicked her, and struck her with a child’s bicycle. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment for injuries police described as serious, but not life-threatening.

Bedford and Forest streets were blocked off by investigators around for about an hour, along with part of Route 18.

Police said Hilaire, who is charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and another count of assault and battery, also had an unspecified outstanding warrant.

The investigation into the assault remains ongoing, police said.

Hilaire is expected to be arraigned in Brockton District Court sometime Thursday.
