Boston Police Department signs the 30x30 Initiative, aiming to advance women in the force

BOSTON — Today, the Boston Police Department joined the 30x30 Initiative, a movement that aims to have 30% of sworn recruits be women by 2030.

Commissioner Cox and Mayor Wu held a ceremony today to sign the 30x30 Pledge. They were joined by members of the Department and the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement, along with BPD’s Women in Blue.

Nationwide, women make up an average of 12% of sworn officers and 3% of police leadership in departments, according to Boston Police.

The BPD is already above that average, reporting that 15% of the Department is made up of women. 24% of the current police recruit class is also women, along with 41% of their leadership.

According to the BPD’s website, the Department wants “to continue to build upon these numbers and work to recruit, retain and promote women in all ranks”.

The BPD joins 325 other departments that have signed the pledge nationwide. They are the 6th department to join the initiative in Massachusetts.
