BOSTON — We’re not top 10, but Boston just made the cut when it comes to the top 20 “Best Places to Live in the U.S.,” according to US News & World Report.
Boston is ranked #18 - with an overall rating of 6.6, using the criteria of quality of life, desirability, value, job market, and “net migration.”
“Boston offers much in the way of culinary exploration and cultural entertainment, which can be expensive luxuries for city dwellers on a budget. However, there are plenty of affordable options,” according to the US News rankings. “Boston is a notoriously expensive metro area. If you are looking to purchase a home in Boston, prices can vary drastically based on the neighborhood, though they tend to be higher than the national median.”
U.S. News & World Report says it analyzed 150 metro areas in the country to compile its rankings - “based on quality of life and the job market in each metro area, as well as the value of living there and people’s desire to live there.”
“Boston often feels like a small town with all the perks of city life. It is historic but ever-evolving. The metro area features a diverse culinary scene, access to cultural institutions, and proximity to world-class schools, employers and health care. It is on the cutting edge of medicine and technology but traditional in its love of pastimes like cheering on hometown heroes at Fenway Park. It is a region of sports enthusiasts, artists and entrepreneurs,” says US News & World Report
The top spot - #1 in the country - went to Huntsville, Alabama, with an overall score of 7.0.
U.S News & World Report says Huntsville “has undergone a renaissance in recent years. An outbreak of new construction downtown means more shopping, dining and apartment options are available. Just west of downtown, a defunct cotton mill became a bustling arts center, and craft breweries, restaurants and an ax-throwing venue have sprung up in a renovated old middle school.”
Rounding out the top 5 in the rankings are:
#2 - Colorado Springs, CO
#3 - Green Bay, WI
#4 - Boulder, CO
#5 - San Jose, CA.
