Ambulance flips on its side in Brockton T-bone crash

BROCKTON, Mass. — An ambulance was struck and flipped on its side in a crash involving a van in Brockton Friday afternoon.

Dashboard-camera video from another driver captures the Brewster Ambulance leaving a Mobil gas station on Belmont Street (Route 123) shortly before 3 p.m., before attempting to cross two lanes of eastbound traffic to take a left turn and travel westbound. The ambulance safely crosses one lane of traffic but doesn’t make it past the double-yellow lines as a van in the second lane T-bones the ambulance.

The video shows bystanders at a nearby hotel rush into the street to help. One man attempts to kick out the windshield, but it would take firefighters removing the windshield and helping the two EMTs out.

The ambulance did not have a patient inside. All three people involved were evaluated at the hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the van, who told police he had slammed on his brakes but could not stop in time, was cited for driving without a license, Brockton police said.

Mark Brewster, CEO and president of Brewster Ambulance Service, told Boston 25 News Friday night the ambulance driver was not found to be at fault and was not cited.

“Thankfully, there were only minor injuries to our crew and the driver of the other vehicle,” Brewster said. “The ambulance did not have a patient on board and was not responding lights and sirens at the time of the crash. We appreciate the outpouring of support we have received from our partners and communities and the concern for our team’s wellbeing.”

Brockton police continued to investigate the accident Friday.
