BOSTON — The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, alongside Boston 26 representatives, outlined massive opportunities and potential challenges that the World Cup could bring this June for businesses, corporations, and entrepreneurs.
During a hybrid event on Wednesday, roughly 600 people joined a presentation and discussion about the economic boom the greater Boston area will see starting this June.
Additionally, challenges for business, including transportation, staffing, scheduling, inventory, and more were discussed. Boston 26 officials urged businesses to sort that out and begin communication about those hurdles.
Jim Rooney, president and CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, said the event was organized alongside the host board because his office was receiving inquiries from local companies.
“We’re talking about billions of dollars’ worth of spending that will take place during the World Cup games in the greater Boston and Massachusetts area,” he said. “Let’s start accelerating the pace of information about logistics, about the way people can be involved.”
FIFA representatives there said they expect 5 billion viewers to tune in for the matches starting in June. They additionally expect thousands of international fans to pour into Massachusetts.
Tanisha Sullivan, Head of External Engagement & Health Equity Strategy at Sanofi and member of the FIFA Boston 26 Honorary Board, also urged fans to engage in the economic frenzy.
She encouraged fans to embrace the culture, “At their local pub, at their local restaurant, to have a collective experience of enjoying these matches.”
Meanwhile, entrepreneurs like Artie Malinauskas of Scrolls & Strolls Sightseeing Tours in Boston left with notes of useful information.
“It’s absolutely astounding,” he said. “The energy and enthusiasm of people all around the world.”
He added, “We are trying to put something together that’s really special.”
The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce hopes the World Cup can serve as an example to the world that Boston can host massive sporting events.
Rooney finished, “This is a platform to not only create immediate economic opportunity, but future economic opportunity for again the benefits of everybody.”
