2 people sent to hospital after serious box truck accident in Saugus

SAUGUS, Mass. — Two people suffered serious injuries after a rollover crash involving a box truck on Route 1 in Saugus on Saturday morning, state police said.

The crash, which involved a 2016 Toyota HINO box truck with a Maine registration, owned by Chubby Fish Inc., of Portland, Maine, occurred around 5:18 a.m. at a CVS parking lot just north of Main Street.

A 36-year-old Waltham woman was driving; a 33-year-old Haverhill man was the passenger. Both were extricated from truck and sent to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries, state police said.

After arriving on scene, emergency responders saw that the truck caught on fire after crashing and was beginning to spill a large amount of fuel into the CVS parking lot.

The Saugus Fire Department was able to mitigate the spill while environmental protection officials responded to the scene to assess any hazards caused by the spill.

Only one traffic lane was closed during the rescue response and investigation because most of the crash scene was within the CVS lot.

Troopers cleared from the scene at approximately 6:10 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
