Investigators blame thief with blow torch for Quincy fire

QUINCY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) --  Investigators are blaming a thief with a blow torch for sparking the devastating fire at Quincy's Old City Hall.

The flames began shortly before 1 a.m. on Tuesday at the historic late 19th century building. Firefighters said the building, which had been under construction, was taken over by heavy flames.

Fire officials said the fire quickly jumped to three alarms and about 40 firefighters were called in. While officials say they were able to control the flames fairly quickly, the fire still did extensive damage.

The historic building was built in 1844 and was about half finished with a $9 million renovation. Officials say that New City Hall, an adjacent building, was not damaged at all.

Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch told Fox 25's Joy Lim Nakrin that the fire has set back construction on the building six to eight weeks.

Over the weekend, police said copper pipes were stolen from the attic of Old City Hall. The State Fire Marshal's office said the person responsible for the theft is linked to the fire, and authorities are asking for help in finding the suspect.
