Outdoor dining scene must adapt to changing seasons

WALTHAM, Mass. — The outdoor dining scene is helping restaurants stay in business while also helping stop the spread of the virus, but as we all know this time of year, the weather can go south really quick.

Restaurants are scrambling to figure out ways to keep the outdoor dining spaces open. 

In A Pickle Restaurant owner Tim Burke says he is “a little bit worried about the fall coming and what we are going to do.” 

Burke has been looking into buying outdoor heaters. He says there has been a shortage of propane tanks.

The Massachusetts Restaurant Association says it is working on securing bulk buying discounts on tents, heaters and propane, and other equipment to help extend the season.

Burke says it has been non-stop challenges since this pandemic started but they will continue to find safe ways for customers to enjoy eating out. 

“If we were allowed to do this permanently we would invest a lot more money into it and make it so it was a little more comfortable for the guest, a little more easy for us not having to repair things all of the time,” said Burke.
