Massachusetts native co-develops COVID-19 dating site

NEW YORK — Finding love can be tough at times, even when you’re not social distancing. But a Massachusetts native may have found the answer for today’s coupling conundrums.

“People are saying they wish this existed before this would save them a lot of time, money you know commute energy. Everything possible a bad first date can give you,” said Amanda Shane.

Shane grew up in Newton and now lives in New York City. About six weeks ago, just about the time a stay-at-home order was put in place, she and a friend, Chelsea Mandel, launched a dating service called Catch Feelings Not COVID. It’s a way for singles to connect and have a social life.

“We’ve set up, I’d say, around 1,800 to 2,000 dates so far,” Shane said.

Each date takes place via a video call and is quick. Daters have only 15 minutes for the date. To sign up, you fill out a questionnaire on their website about yourself and what you’re looking for in a partner.

Shane and her partner then hand pick couples who they think are compatible. The service has spread to 10 cities across the country, including Boston.

“We’ve had some success in Boston so far. We’ve set up some couples. We are continuing to grow our numbers in Boston,” Shane said.

The 30-year-old Shane, who is single and a social worker, said their site isn’t just for lock down love.

“People are coming back to us with feedback and saying they’d like this service after the COVID-19 lock down ends. So we think this service will be vital for dating after COVID,” Shane commented.

The service is free.
