BOSTON — It’s typically the busiest month of the year for gyms as people hope to get a jumpstart on New Year’s resolutions. This year, however, the start to 2021 has been anything but hectic.
In Boston, fitness centers remain closed through January 6 as local officials try to bring COVID-19 infection rates down.
“January is really important, and we need to be kind of firing on all cylinders this month in order to have a good year,” said Billy Najam, the founder of Lynx Fitness Club in Boston.
According to Najam, 20% of their client memberships are normally bought in January.

“People are coming off the holidays, maybe they ate and drank a little too much and decide that they want to start getting in shape again,” he said.
This year, gyms and other fitness facilities like his are off to a slow start as many people avoid working out indoors and around other people. Najam said he is thankful for a loyal customer base and is hoping Mayor Marty Walsh does not extend the rollback in phases.
“It’s really hard to open the business, close the business, open the business, close the business,” he explained.
He added that, while he continues to offer personal training sessions, he’s hopeful that the vaccine rollout will help bring more customers back in 2021.

“Hopefully they reopen the clubs and people can start coming back in and being healthy again,” he said.
