FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) - Two electricians were hospitalized Saturday morning with burns caused by a small explosion and fire at the Framingham Public Library.
The men were working on an electrical panel in the basement of the main branch on Lexington St., when a "flash explosion" occurred, Framingham Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Burns said.
One of the electricians became engulfed in flames, suffering second- and third-degree burns to 36 percent of his body, mostly his arms and torso, Burns said. He was rushed to a Worcester hospital and was still being treated Saturday night.
The other man suffered second-degree burns to his arms, mostly from putting out the fire on his coworker's body. He was treated at a Framingham hospital and released.
Fire crews put out the fire at the electrical panel with an extinguisher, and Eversource cut the power to the building.
Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the explosion.
A post on the library website says the building is undergoing a "major renovation" that began in September, including new lighting.
The library will be closed at least through Sunday, the website says. Visitors are asked to call the library before going there on Monday.
