Dudley Square could be in for name change, mayor supports ballot question

The Bolling Building, in the heart of Dudley Square, houses the headquarters for Boston Public Schools.

BOSTON — Dudley Square could get a name change.

Mayor Marty Walsh and City Councilor Kim Janey support a non-binding question for the November ballot to learn residents feelings on the name.

Proponents say Dudley Square is named for an enabler of the region's slave trade.

The proposal is to change the name to Nubian Square after one of the earliest African civilizations.

The city council and the mayor will decide by Sept. 18 whether to add the question to the November ballot.
