Driver tries to use sidewalk to get around delivery truck in Quincy

A driver decided to take a unique route to get around traffic in Quincy, heading onto a sidewalk to try and pass a stopped delivery truck, police say.

Quincy Police posted about the incident Wednesday afternoon, saying the delivery truck was blocking the travel lane, leading to an idea popping into a driver's head to try and solve the problem.

Pictures posted by police show the driver's car on the sidewalk next to the truck, and the driver allegedly told police that, "You're making a bigger deal out of this than necessary."

Mathew Freid, the owner of Idle Hour Bar on Hancock Street in Quincy, said he'd "never seen anything so ridiculous."

"It shouldn't have been this hard," Freid said. "I just saw someone really impatient, and try to get out of a parking space."

Freid was left speechless after watching surveillance video of the incident, showing an officer on a bicycle responding as the driver tried to manuever on the sidewalk.

"I don’t even know what to make of it," Freid said. "Someone just didn’t want to wait for a delivery truck to move, drove up the sidewalk and couldn’t negotiate it. Like a 20 point turn, he thought he was off-roading, trying to get over the curb. He looked like he couldn’t figure it out from there."

The driver was struggling for almost 20 minutes, and managed to back up safely, despite the hurdles.

"He got stuck," Freid said. "Another car, the building, a trash can. You name it, he got stuck. A fire hydrant, couldn’t figure it out. I think the sidewalk is hallow, it’s lucky he didn’t go through."
